Online movie watching service Vudu was first launched back in 2006. They met with resistance from consumers due to the high pricing of their set top boxes, which they required people to pay $400 for before then having to rent or buy digital services from Vudu. This is understandable given that game consoles and cable providers would start providing a similar service at around the same time.

That said it seems that Wal-Mart has big plans for this flagging media rental service.
Peter Kafka has been predicting for a long time that Wal-Mart would attempt to purchase Vudu, but even though he saw this deal coming several months ago even he was shocked to learn just how much Wal-Mart where willing to pay for a company that has essentially never made a profit. $100 million dollars would seem to indicate there is a game afoot here. Its well worth keeping an eye on what Wal-Mart does next as it looks to expand its business interests.
